The ruler of all the seas in front of the Town Hall

The fountain is dominated by a sandstone statue of Neptune, the Roman god of water and ruler of the seas, holding a two-handed trident on his right-hand side. When Neptune originally stood in the square, he was facing the back of the Town Hall; the copy of Neptune we see today, the work of Jiří Novák, is turned the other way and looks directly at the balcony and into the windows of the Mayor's Lounge. The statue includes a dolphin, on which Neptune stands and which serves as a gargoyle.

The travelling fountain

In 1826, Neptune's Fountain replaced the older wooden fountain in front of the old Liberec Town Hall on Staroměstské náměstí (now nám. Dr. E. Beneše). In 1896, three years after the demolition of the old Town Hall, the fountain was moved a few metres to the middle of the square and a metal railing was added. In 1925 its place was taken by a new fountain designed by Franz Metzner (the motif of which was a statue of Prometheus), and the Neptune Fountain was moved to Nerudovo náměstí. Metzner's fountain was dismantled in the summer of 1945 as it allegedly looked too Germanic, leaving the square in front of the Town Hall without a fountain. Although the Neptune Fountain on Nerudovo náměstí was declared a cultural monument in 1964, it continued to fall into disrepair. As the fountain is the last piece of evidence showing how the city used to be supplied with drinking water, the city of Liberec decided to restore the preserved parts of the fountain, put them together and get them working on the original site on náměstí Dr. E. Beneše. The people of Liberec gathered to watch Neptune’s return to his former spot in front of the Town Hall in 2010.
