The thick fog that covered the Ještěd Ridge on 20 August 1948 proved fateful for the twin-engine C-3 aircraft that was carrying aviation designers from Prague to Liberec. The passengers included engineer Antonín Husník, the designer of the Aero series of planes. Just a few dozen metres higher, and the aircraft would have safely crossed the hillside. A stone Airmen’s Cairn with a commemorative plaque stands on the summit at the site of the crash, in which five people lost their lives, and the small wreck of the plane can still be seen nearby to this day.
