The Little Martian

Do you fancy a selfie with an alien? Anything is possible in Liberec! Make a trip to Hotel Ještěd, that looks a bit like a spaceship, and find him among the rocks nearby. The Little Martian – or rather his 1,7m tall statue – is sitting there and waiting for his new friends.

Stubborn artist

The bronze Martian is a big lad! Even sitting down, he stands 170 cm high and his spiritual father is Jaroslav Róna – the famous Czech painter, sculptor and founding member of Tvrdohlaví (“The Stubborn”).

A Martian inspired by Venus

The history behind the creation of the "Child of Mars" sculpture is rather complicated. Róna himself says that before he crafted it, he painted a picture with a similar theme. He was inspired by a photograph of a foetus rubbing its eyes. He then found a photograph of the hot lava of Venus, giving him the idea of creating a creature that lives in an environment completely unacceptable for humans, but quite naturally feels at home there. The result was the story of a child from another planet - a Martian who has wandered far from his homeland.

Alien on Ještěd

Many ufologists might be surprised to hear that the alien they have been searching for is on Ještěd, but even this ingenious location was not entirely obvious. The little Martian has travelled around Liberec a fair bit. He started out at the library, and was then at the town hall, and as the locals liked him, he’s taken up permanent residence by the "spaceship" on Ještěd, where he cries that he is lost.
