Liberec Zoo is the oldest in Bohemia! Although it is one of the smaller ones, meaning you can take everything in during a couple of hours, it’s still a highly acclaimed zoo for its success in breeding endangered species. It boasts an extraordinary collection of mountain ungulates and birds of prey, for instance. Some of its most interesting species include the golden takin, the snow leopard, and the black tree monitor. The Astronomical Bird Clock in the Storks’ Nest sings every hour. That’s something you have to see!The star attractions
The animals most popular with visitors include the red pandas, giant anteaters, feline predators - snow leopards and Chinese leopards, Barbary lions, Rothschild's giraffes, maneless and Chapman's zebras, South American sea lions and Humboldt penguins. Often very busy and riotously loud, the troop of hamadryas baboons also attracts plenty of attention.
The most comprehensive collection of birds of prey on the old continent
- Bearded Vulture - involved in a repatriation project, i.e. a return to the wild
- Eastern Imperial Eagle – the breeding of Eastern Imperial Eagles has a long tradition at Liberec Zoo
- Golden Eagle - the chick here was the first to be born in captivity, and was subsequently released into the Czech countryside.
- Sea Eagle - the largest European bird of prey and the largest eagle living in the Czech Republic
Rare ungulates
- Bukhara Urial - one of the most endangered large mammals on the planet
- Somali Donkey - the most endangered equid in the world (only around 230 specimens live in captivity worldwide and an estimated 500-600 are the last ones in the wild)
- Bharal - a Himalayan species of wild goat that is one of the few rarely bred species
- Spotted Sambar – no more than 700 specimens left in the wild
- Golden Takin - imported to Liberec in 2002 from Beijing Zoo; regularly breeds in Liberec and is gradually transported to other zoos.
Exhibition of tropical lizards and frogs
- Turquoise Dwarf Gecko - one of the most endangered geckos in the world
- Psychedelic Rock Gecko – an attractively-coloured gecko from Vietnam
- Henkel's Leaf-tailed Gecko - a master of camouflage, it can blend in perfectly with its surroundings
- Panther Chameleon - one of the largest and most colourful chameleons in the world
- Eleven unique and rare species of tropical frogs can also be found in the ZooExpo Pavilion, and together with the terrariums and paludarium in the Tropical Pavilion, Liberec Zoo now boasts one of the largest zoo collections of frogs in the country.
Bird clock in the Stork's Nest
There are six that birds sing every hour at Liberec Zoo! The zoo has prepared a real treat for its visitors - a bird clock. It’s located in the oldest building in the zoo grounds, in the U Čápa (At the Stork) confectionery at the bottom of the garden. Visitors can enjoy the song of the Bali myna, the Nias myna, the Sumatran laughingthrush, the straw-headed bulbul, the white-rumped shama and the Javan green magpie. The clock is there to make the zoo more enjoyable for visitors, but above all to draw attention to the fact that these little-known endangered species are facing extinction.
Liberec Zoo helps save animals
More than half of the species at the zoo are included in European conservation programmes (EEP, ESB), which help to save and maintain viable populations of endangered species through coordinated breeding under human supervision in zoos.
Valley of endangered wildlife and projects for the future
Liberec Zoo will undergo a significant transformation by 2025 and also in the years to follow. Plans are in place to expand the zoo with a new area containing large natural enclosures for new animal species and new modern exhibitions, as well as the complete refurbishment of the existing pavilions.
Enjoy an adventure and learn something while you’re at it...
