A missed chance to be first
Back in 1924 the German mountain association for Ještěd and the Jizera Mountains attempted to obtain a permit to build a suspension cable car running up to the mountain-top hotel, which it owned at the time. The plans were drawn up by Ing. Roman Wienberger from Leipzig. In the end, however, the cable car was built by František Wiesner’s renowned engineering plant in Chrudim in 1932-1933 for Czechoslovak State Railways. With this, Liberec lost its chance to be first, as it was beaten by the Giant Mountains, where a cable car was opened in 1928 from Janské Lázně to Černá hora.
Extensive reconstruction
The Ještěd cable car underwent major reconstruction in 1971-1975, with the two struts replaced by a single one 30 metres high, and the main drive system was replaced with one that was twice as fast and powerful. After 1980, when the original shuttle cable car from Janské Lázně to Černá hora was closed down, for many years the cable car up to Ještěd was the oldest working cable car system in the country. From 1993 it was owned and operated by Czech Railways, and was the only CR cable car not to be privatized or passed on to the municipal authority.
A tragic accident
On 31 October 2021, just one day before the start of its planned closure for the regular autumn inspection, the towing rope unfortunately broke and cabin no. 2 plummeted to the ground, killing the conductor (he was alone in the cabin). The cabin cable car on Ještěd has been out of service since then. Current standards mean it is no longer possible for this cable car to run in its original form. A new option was therefore chosen for the re-opening of the cable car line: one cabin suspended on two cables, with the line being extended all the way down to the public transport terminus. The most optimistic scenario envisages the cable car line up and running from January 2029.
Opening hours
The cableway starts at 9 a.m. on a national holiday. * The cableway depends on weather conditions. * Cabin departures are parallel from both stations. *
Extraordinary trips are possible in groups up to 30 people in one way. * Transport of bicycles is limited and may be excluded for operational reasons.
