Konrad Brewery, Vratislavice nad Nisou
Treat yourself to a Konrad
The brewery brews craft beer from selected ingredients and spring water from its own well, following proven recipes and using tried-and-tested technologies. The brewery’s core range comprises Czech lager, but you can also enjoy strong, dark, flavoured or non-alcoholic beers. Konrad beer boasts an impressively balanced, delicious taste, a velvety-smooth bitterness and a pleasant hoppy aroma. It’s no wonder that this “golden nectar” has won acclaim and a number of prestigious awards in recognition of its quality.
Purely Czech beer
The new era of the brewery now follows a purely Czech philosophy. The water used to brew the beer is drawn from local wells in Vratislavice and has the advantage is that it is soft enough to make it perfect for a Pilsner-style lager. They make their own malt from Elbe barley and the beer gets just that right touch of bitterness from the famous Saaz hops. Thanks to this, Konrad is proud to be certified with the Protected Geographical Indication "Czech beer".
Kegs, bottles, cans exported all over the world
The brewery keeps up with the times, so besides kegs and bottles, it also distributes its beer in cans. Nowadays, Konrad beer finds its way all over the world and is also enjoyed in Germany, France, Sweden, the USA, Japan, China and Australia.
An indomitable tradition
Saturday, 24 January 1874 was a glorious day for the borough of Vratislavice – it saw the opening of the brewery. In its very first year, it produced a respectable 34,680 hectolitres of beer, which was exported to Vienna to meet the huge demand. After the crisis of 1881, the brewery continued to thrive under the management of the Ginzkeys, a family of factory owners from Vratislavice. Half of its annual production was exported, and the brewery was the second biggest in Bohemia. Years of success alternated with less prosperous ones (wartime); in 1948 the company became part of Severočeské pivovary (North Bohemian Breweries), was privatised in the 1990s to form Pivovary Vratislavice (Vratislavice Breweries), after which a merger made it part of Pražské pivovary (Prague Breweries), before it closed on 25 May 1998. Fortunately, production was resumed two years later, on 25 May 2000, when Hols bought the local property and brewing facilities from the original owners. However, as the “Vratislav” trademark remained the property of the original owners, the new proprietors of the Vratislavice brewery began to brew their beer under the new brand name “Konrad” (the name of the prince who succeeded Vratislav on the throne). So, great beer is now once again brewed below Ještěd!
