Liberec in film
Spider-Man fought a battle on the square
Spider-Man found himself in Liberec in the aptly named “Far from Home”. So, we can't be surprised that he mistook our city for Prague and had a good leap around Liberec's main square in a ruthless fight with the villain. The epic battle that raged on the square completely destroyed the "Prague Festival of Lights", with the film shoot meaning that for a few days Liberec lost its beautiful fairground attractions set up in front of the Town Hall. Fortunately, the Town Hall itself survived the skirmish unscathed, even after Spider-man himself went clambering over its facade in a spider suit.
A genius stayed at the Town Hall and in the museum
In the National Geographic miniseries, the ingenious Albert Einstein also guessed that he’d look his best in our Town Hall, and so its interiors appear in most of the episodes. The meeting room on the 2nd floor became Albert’s study, while the ceremonial hall stood in for the university lecture hall where he gave his classes. Scenes were also shot in the North Bohemian Museum, at the railway station, in the Liebieg Palace and lots of other places in and around Liberec.
The dramatist Brecht needed snow in summer
Some other prominent historical figures also appeared in films starring Liberec, such as the founder of psychoanalysis Sigmund Freud and the playwright Bertolt Brecht. His scenes were shot in the Šalda Theatre, the interiors of which stood in for 5 other theatres in the film. The film shoot also saw a strange phenomenon in Liberec, with the intersection in front of the theatre covered in snow. Not that we don't have enough of the stuff here below Ještěd in the winter, of course, but it was a sweltering July at the time!
Milada Horáková addressed parliament in the Town Hall
The feature film Milada was shot in several locations around the Czech Republic, including Liberec. The city’s Town Hall ceremonial hall was used for the scenes depicting parliament. The film was shot in English, which was also spoken by the Czech actors. It was later dubbed for Czech viewers.
Traitors portrayed the world of the drug mafia
The six-part Czech Television series "Zrádci" ("Traitors") was written by Jiří Vacek, one of the founders of the National Drug Headquarters. Scenes depicting three weeks in the life of a drug dealer and police informer were shot in Liberec at locations such as the Technical University, the Regional Hospital, the Clarion Grandhotel Zlatý Lev and the Pytloun Grand Hotel Imperial. At the Finále Plzeň film festival, Zrádci was declared the best TV and Internet project in the "series" category.
Winton’s Children travelled to England through Liberec
One Life is the name of the film charting the moving story of Nicholas Winton, who saved 669 children, mostly Jewish, from occupied Czechoslovakia. Liberec station moved to England for this film, to become the place where the children got off the train and headed off in search of their new life.
Smetana conducted in the theatre
In February 2024 the film Smetana was shot in the F. X. Šalda Theatre in Liberec, starring Václav Neužil. We’re looking forward to the launch of this movie, as from the clips we’ve seen we really do get the impression that the famous music composer literally came to life. It's also nice and symbolic - 2024 marks the 200th anniversary of his birth and the 140th anniversary of his death.
