Places to visit in Liberec free of charge

Art free of charge

Treat yourself to a bit of culture and art. You can visit the permanent exhibition at Liberec Regional Gallery for a voluntary admission fee. Adults are sure to enjoy the rare works of art, while children can let their imagination run wild and make their own artistic creations in an interactive exhibition.

The Small Exhibition Hall opposite Liberec Town Hall is open free of charge every Thursday. Although the exhibition space there is small, the exhibitions change on a regular basis, so you can see something new every time you visit. Plenty of different things have been exhibited there so far: glass, ceramics, photographs, puppets… So what can you expect next time? Let yourself be surprised.

For a voluntary admission fee you can visit the North Bohemian Museum in Liberec all year round and on any day of the week (except Mondays). This hosts permanent exhibitions presenting the development of European art, the nature of the Jizera Mountains and the city’s tumultuous history. You can play with the collection of automatophones (self-playing mechanical devices and instruments), admire Metelka's Nativity scene (even if it's not Christmas), or browse a variety of current exhibitions.

Swimming free of charge

On hot summer days, a great spot to cool down is at the Forest outdoor swimming pool, although you can also visit it for free in winter, where it’s a place to harden up rather than freshen up. But after all why not, as it’s said to be really healthy. When you look at a map of Liberec, you might get the idea of going for a swim at the nearby Harcov Reservoir. But you’d be mistaken. As it’s under reconstruction, this reservoir is closed until around mid-2025, not to mention the fact that there’s no water in it. So, if you really feel the need to splash around, head off to the Tajch pond in Vesec (or you can go a little further to the reservoir in neighbouring Jablonec).

Views far and wide free of charge

Although it’s not far from Vesec Pond (around 4 kilometres), it’s still a fair climb up the hill to get to the Emperor’s Stone lookout tower. This 23-metre-high structure was built here on the hill in 2018 in place of its wooden predecessor, and to prevent it from meeting the same fate as the first one, it has a metal skeleton; only the cladding is made of wood. If you don’t fancy trudging up a hill, in summer you can enjoy a beautiful view right in the centre of Liberec. That’s because the viewing terrace of the Liberec Regional Office of the Region is open free of charge on weekdays in summer, and to save your legs you can take a unique paternoster lift up to the top.

Travelling or walking around the city free of charge

Liberec public transport is free of charge for children up to 6 years of age and senior citizens over 70. However, a stroll around the city can also be a magical experience. Visit the Information Centre for a map of tourist attractions, or maps of places of interest in the various districts. After all, there’s always something to discover in the streets of Liberec.

Sport in the countryside free of charge

Come to Liberec to enjoy some sport. From anywhere and at any time. To the right you’ll find the forests of the Jizera Mountains, to the left the slopes of Ještěd, and in the middle the city, which will pump fresh energy into your veins. While you keep skiing the tracks here in the mountains in the winter (and we have 200 km of regularly maintained cross-country trails for you), in the summer you simply swap your skis for a bike or put on a pair of good hiking boots and you can head off out again. The north awaits you. A rugged region you're sure to fall in love with!
