Liebieg Chateau

The Liebieg mansion is a fine example of contrasting styles. When you approach it coming down Jablonecká ulice, you first see a rather cute little house. When viewed from the front, it is a grand and prettily decorated mansion, yet seen from the dam, rises in front of you like a colossal castle! The three stages in which it was built are clearly visible. The oldest part was erected in 1896-97 by Adolf Bürger; the central part was designed by architect Humbert Walcher von Molthein, and the complex was finally completed by the Liebieg's "court" architect, Jakob Schmeissner. The mansion was built as a family residence by textile baron Theodor Liebieg Junior, and its decor and lavish facilities at the time earned it a beautiful nickname - the Liebieg Chateau.

Hall of Legends

The biggest and most fascinating room in the mansion is the mysterious Hall of Legends, which was originally a large, lavishly decorated hall two storeys high with an impressive green marble fireplace. In 1939, the hall was divided into two separate floors; the fireplace has been preserved on the lower floor, while the upper one has a painted ceiling depicting scenes from myths and legends.

The first car

As Theodor was a keen technology buff and adventurer, he had a Benz Victoria car imported in 1893, making him the first motorist in Bohemia and the third in Austria-Hungary. He was evidently the first to get a driver's licence and embarked on the world's first long-distance drive.

The first car house

Liebieg had a unique ‘car house’ built behind his villa, with a garage, an inspection pit, a washroom, a workshop and a toilet on the ground floor, while the driver lived on the first floor. There was a petrol tower on top of the building for storing fuel.

The historical Benz Victoria now belongs to the National Technical Museum in Prague and the Liebieg mansion now houses Liberec City Council.
