Along the edge of the Giant Mountains to the best Polish road

Length of the route: 125 kilometres

Ride time: approximately 2.75 hours

It was believed for many years that there were bad roads in Poland. That is not true anymore and one of the best routes for great biking rides can be found on the Polish side of the Jizerské Mountains and the Giant Mountains.

Leave Liberec this time by taking the road in its southeastern part through Vratislavice nad Nisou (point 1) along the No. 14 road towards Jablonec nad Nisou (point 2). When passing Jablonec nad Nisou, take No. 14 road and follow the traffic signs towards Tanvald. There is a fast stretch of the road ahead of you with pleasant bends after leaving Jablonec. Ride through Smržovka and get to Tanvald (point 3), there turn left at the first roundabout and continue your ride on the No. 10 road towards Harrachov. A long passage through Tanvald and follow-up Desná is ahead of you, but you will have a good chance to enjoy a reward in the form of a few fast and clear turns uphill towards Kořenov (point 4), which is quite popular route for a number of local bikers. But it‘s still just an appetizer. The fast turns continue after passing through Kořenov, where you should stick to the No. 10 road towards Harrachov. Approximately one kilometre from its beginning, we recommend not to miss a chance to visit glassworks with a mini-brewery on your left, where you can take part in an exciting excursion, or sit in the restaurant on the upper gallery of glassworks and watch working

glassmakers’ hands. Even the centre of Harrachov itself is worth a visit (turn right just a couple of wheelturns after leaving glassworks) with its ski jumps. If you are enjoying even a longer hiking, it is possible to start longer trips from there to visit several lookout towers, go to the Mumlava waterfalls and to other natural attractions.

But if you are looking forward to another ride, return back to the No. 10 road and continue your ride to the border with Poland (point 5). After passing through Jakuszyce village the nirvana promised above begins, a section of road full of bends, turns and curves with a great surface leading to the

beginning of Szklarska Poręba (point 6). Just after entering Szklarska Poreba, look for a left turn on the No. 358 road, marked towards Świeradow Zdrój. However, we recommend riding to the centre of Poręba first, because it is quite a beautiful spa town reminiscent of the Alpine villages. Follow the No. 358 road to Świeradow Zdrój (point 7), where you leave the main road just at the town office and turn left towards the town centre. After passing through the town, you will approach the T shaped

intersection with the No. 361 road, where you can turn left and return to the state border and continue to Nové Město pod Smrkem (point 8). After passing through Nové Město pod Smrkem ride further on the No. 291 road directly to the magic town of Frýdlant (point 9). The historical centre of the town, as well as the castle and chateau, are definitely worth a short walk. The view of the Frýdlant bulge from the lookout tower in the northern part of the town is also very interesting.

Leave Frýdlant on the No. 13 main road and follow the traffic signs towards Liberec. You can expect some longer stretches of the road with turns and bends with good asphalt, which are a real biker joy. Mníšek (point 10) is the last bigger village before returning to Liberec. There you can easily reach the Fojtka Water Reservoir, which offers nice chance for swimming in a cold water in summer. Continue

your ride from Mníšek on the No. 13 road to E442 speedway, which will take you back to Liberec from the north side.
