After work on the construction of the museum building was completed in 1898, the sandstone plinths were left bare due to a lack of funding and waited a long 122 years before their guardians took up their post. It was only after the extensive reconstruction of the museum, completed in 2020, that statues were added to the staircase.

The sculptures of the lion and lioness were carved for the museum by the acclaimed artist Jaroslav Róna, who also created the Devil sitting in front of the gallery opposite, as well as the little Martian by the Ještěd Hotel.
