A cottage in the city

This inconspicuous timbered house in the Františkov district of Liberec, standing in the shadow of a busy intersection and a nearby factory hall, is a gem that caused history to be rewritten in Liberec. For a long time, the Wallenstein houses in the centre were thought to be the city's oldest residential buildings, until a sensational discovery was made in 2020. Following a scientific analysis of the age of the roof beams, conservationists found out that this cottage dates from as early as 1656-1658, making it some 20 years older than the Wallenstein houses, and thus also the oldest residential house in the Greater Liberec region.
