Back to the roots of the Botanical Garden
the Botanical Garden in Liberec was founded in 1876 at the initiative of the Friends of Nature Society (Verein der Naturfreunde), which began planting trees and shrubs on the site of what is now the North Bohemian Museum. The subsequent construction of the museum forced the botanical garden to move to a new site after just 15 years, where it was opened on 5 September 1895. During World War I and World War II, the garden was used more as a place to grow supplies, including growing vegetables for the inhabitants. It was only after 1945 that the better urban gardening became a scientific institution.
Cells filled with life
The current greenhouse complex dates back to the extensive reconstruction work carried out in between 1995 and 1999, when the outdated greenhouses were replaced by a modern system designed by Ing. arch. Pavle Vaněček. Rather than the former individual greenhouses, the nine exhibition pavilions we see today are grouped together in the shape of plant cells. The same goes for the presentation of the 14 different botanical themes, combining botanical necessity with garden art. In 2014, another specialized pavilion (L) was added to the original greenhouse complex, dedicated to lotuses and tropical water lilies such as Victoria amazonica and the prickly waterlily.
