Karel Hubáček House

This prefabricated house, designed by Karel Hubáček himself, is undoubtedly the most interesting example of individual housing dating from the late 1950s and early 60s.

Lonely prototype

The aim was to design a cheap, affordable and quality house for a wide range of residents, that could be built with the minimum of expense. It was essentially a revolutionary attempt to build a house for the price of an apartment. Sadly, it never got further than the prototype stage; the project was never constructed for the market, and so Karel Hubáček and his family moved into the model home.

Functionalist house

This building is unusual for its experimental panels made from foam concrete and crushed, very hard, pressed slate. The sparse facade is livened up by the wooden facings, subtle columns supporting the upper floor, and the elegant blue-and-white colour scheme. The overall impression is enhanced by a garden with a blue fence, also designed by Karel Hubáček. A metal staircase leads from the ground floor with the garage up to the first floor, containing the main living area. You can walk from the living room into the private rooms either along the corridor or through the kitchen.

The building now belongs to the museum

Since December 2023 the Karel Hubáček House has been in the care of the North Bohemian Museum, which plans to set up an exhibition there dedicated to the life and work of this world-famous architect.
