Formerly one of the largest synagogues in Central Europe, it was burned to the ground by the Nazis during Kristallnacht in 1938. No fitting use was made of this abandoned place until the late 20th and early 21st century, when a library with a Jewish prayer room was built there with the support of Czech President Václav Havel and Roman Herzog, President of the Federal Republic of Germany. It was symbolically named "Building of Reconciliation" and is intended not only to erase the wrongdoings of the past, but also to give hope to the future by spreading education and enlightenment.
Information service and internet
On the ground floor of the building there is the library information service, Wi-Fi, public internet (you can use your own USB disks and print out your work) and also the library café offering a selection of drinks and refreshments.
General library
The basement houses the general library, which offers millions of volumes of fiction for loan, including foreign-language books, magazines and also publications from a wide range of fields. For some inspiration, check out the selection of top books on the tables. Loans are easy using the self-service machines.
Study library and periodicals
The 1st floor is home to periodicals (daily newspapers, magazines) that can be read there in the library, as well as scripts, specialised foreign-language publications, maps of cities and countries, as well as e-book readers and iPads that can be loaned out.
Library for children and youngsters
Children's fiction fills the 3rd floor of the building. A wealth of fairy tales, short stories, novels, comics, fables, sci-fi, fantasy and other literary genres for young readers.
Music library: The 4th floor is home to a diverse range of music CDs, films on DVD, audio books, sheet music for various instruments, as well as board games, card games, knowledge games and strategy games, for players of all ages.
Large hall and conference room
There are halls, meeting rooms and exhibition spaces available for hire in the library. After all, many people also come here in search of culture. You can find a busy programme of exhibitions and other cultural events on the library's website.
