The pool in the past

The swimming pool on Tržní náměstí was opened on 1 May 1984. The designer of the building – the prominent Liberec architect Pavel Švancer – made ingenious use of the sloping plot of land, so when viewed from Tržní náměstí, most of the building is hidden in the valley. The red, sharply angular metal structure is softened by bright white ceramic semi-cylinders. The pool is unusual in that it is made from waterproof concrete without any additional insulation. As well as the pool, the architect also designed the adjacent grounds, opting for a tract of park land with small pieces of architecture. The pool is an extraordinarily fine example of a late modernist sports building and is one of the most interesting structures of its kind in the country.

Refurbishment of the pool

Liberec pool has been open for an impressive 39 years, and is now to be refurbished and completely repaired. The annex, built 12 years ago and containing a 25m pool with an 8.5-metre diving tower and a children’s sauna, is also closed. The pool will be closed for two years while this work is carried out.
