Walk through Liberec´s Old Town

Anyone planning to visit Liberec should definitely not miss taking a walk through Staré Město (the Old Town). It is not an overstatement to say that it is one of the prettiest parts of the city. You will have the opportunity to admire the most precious architectural jewels you can find in the city, and at the same time to enjoy a pleasant walk.

Our circuit starts at the square in front of the city hall, leads past the theatre and Pošta Café, continues across the bridge, from which you get a view of the bus stop called the “Dinner of Giants”, then past the library and across Neruda´s Square you leave the busy centre behind and take Masaryk Street towards the Lidové sady area. Along the way, you will learn about the local schools and, of course, will not miss the Technical Museum, Regional Gallery, former Chamber of Commerce and Trade as well as the North Bohemian Museum.

You will enter Liberec’s oasis of peace. Sumptuous villas, most of which have already been renovated, with gardens that please the eye especially at the end of May and beginning of June, when the rhododendrons and azaleas are in bloom – all of that highlights the magnificence and the present genius loci. In this residential area, you can see obvious ambitions to make Liberec the “Vienna of the North”, which emerged during the great boom the city enjoyed at the end of the 19th century.

You will walk all the way to Lidové sady – a place designed for entertainment and relaxation. You could start a hiking trip to the mountains from here. However, you have chosen a tour of the Old Town, and that is why you slowly make your way back, through the park called “Dubák”, in which oak trees were planted on the occasion of the Emperor’s wedding anniversary, along another, no less charming street, towards a swimming pool, past the army barracks and to the Garden of Memories, where you can stop by the Tomb of Johann Liebieg and contemplate the importance and influence of the Liebieg family in Liberec. You then head off to have a look at the Art-Nouveau student dormitories. From here, you keep going, past the Small Theatre (Malé divadlo) and the Elementary Art School to your last stop, the Varšava Cinema.

We hope you have a nice walk!
