Length of the route: 154 kilometres
Ride time: approximately 3 hours
Trojzemí is a name of the region where the territories of three countries meet one each other. In our case, they are the Czech Republic, Germany and Poland, whose territories neigbour between Hrádek nad Nisou and Zittau. Let‘s mount the bike and ride through our Trojzemí to explore the variety of border areas.
From Zittau, we head off to Ostritz (point 1) today along the No. 99 road. We will ride along the Neisse River from time to time, which follows the borderline between Germany and Poland. Just before entering Ostritz, we recommend making the first stop - at the Marienthal Monastery, the oldest functioning Cistercian convent in Germany, which has its history very closely related to Czech
history. Marienthal was under the protection of King John of Luxemburg and King Charles IV. held
his protective arm above it, too.
We reach the Berzdorfer See lake by riding along the No. 99 road through beautiful German villages.
This lake was created by flooding former brown coal mine and offers nice opportunity to stop. Right on the shore of the lake, you will find a large bucket wheel, which is accesible and where you can take a picture or take a close look at it. Then continue to Görlitz (point 2), a town that has a beautiful and well preserved historic centre. The Church of St. Peter and Paul is the pride of the town, it is definitely worth your attention, too. Some corners of the town may seem familiar to you when you walk through the downtown even though you have never ever been there. Maybe you have seen the places you are walking through in some films. Görlitz is very popular film location and local inhabitants proudly call it „Görliwood“. You can get a brochure written in Czech in the local information centre, which tells you which films were taken there and where exactly they were filmed. A “film walk” is definitely worth it because with the highest probability the majority of you saw the Reader or Gradhotel Budapest films. However, Görlitz has one more peculiarity: it is situated directly on the border with Poland. The Neisse River separates the towns of Görlitz and Zgorzelec, that river led us from the very start of our today’s trip from Zittau. We will then move to the Polish part of the town from where we will ride southward along the No. 352 road to the village of Koźmin;
there we will exit that road to the left and take the No. 355 towards Zawidów (point 3), which is located on the border with the Czech Republic. We will cross the state border and enter the small village of Habartice.
Frýdlant (point 4) will be our next goal, where you will get to in less than fifteen minutes. Do not be
confused; the river that is waiting for you in Frýdlant is not the Lusatian Neisse. It‘s the Smědá River, which is one of the tributaries of our today’s guide, the Neisse. Just before crossing over the river in the town centre, turn left onto the No. 290 road and ride around the castle you can see at the hilltop. If you are attracted by the sightseeings, then do not miss the chance to visit this architecturally diverse mansion. A pass through the village of Raspenava (point 5) is waiting for you, turn to the left there and follow the roadsigns towards Liberec; then ride through a beautiful beech forest, which offers an unforgettable experience of riding uphill to the U Kozy mountain saddle and immediately downhill to Oldřichov v Hájích and to Mníšek (point 6). At the crossroads in Mníšek turn right and take the No. 13 road, then turn left onto the No. 592 road behind the gas station at the end of the village and follow the roadsigns towards Chrastava. Continue your ride to Chrastava (point 7) along the Jeřice River, which is also the tributary of the Neisse River. Take just a short ride along the E442 expressway towards Děčín and exit that road in less than 5 minutes by the very first exit and continue your ride to the roundabout and straight ahead towards Bílý Kostel nad Nisou (point 8). And that is the place where our today’s guide, the Neisse River, is waiting to lead us again. We will
ride along the river for a while only; we will leave it on its own to have a chance to enjoy a pleasant
climbing up and then descending of the No 2716 road towards Grabštejn. However, we will not enter the village of that name unless we are going to visit a Rennaissance chateau there.
Turn left towards Chotyně at the crossroads (point 9) in the forest. After passing through Dolní Suchá, we will take the No. 13 road (turn right towards Děčín), which will take us to a busy intersection at Jablonné v Podještědí (point 10). There we turn right and head to the border
crossing of Petrovice on a quiet and pleasant No. 270 road. We will return to the German side of the border at this border crossing point. The road connecting the towns of Lückendorf (point 11), Oybin (point 12) and Jonsdorf (point 13) is very popular. You can expect beautiful bends and turns, quality surface and beautiful forests along the road. At Jonsdorf, follow the main road towards Großschönau (point 14). Take the left and right turn and follow the roadsigns towards Spitzkunnersdorf and ride straight ahead to Oderowitz (point 15); you will ride past the summer sledge toboggan track there. When you hit the main No. 96 road, turn right and it will take you back to Zittau in a moment.
